Mapping an Invisible World

It’s incredibly difficult to find a CD where every track is a great track. A few have been released so far this year: Almost Here by The Academy Is..., Gratitude’s self-titled debut, and now Mapping an Invisible World, Days Away’s Fueled By Ramen Debut. I’m not exactly sure where this disc falls within the scene. It’s certainly not pop-punk or mall punk or emo or screamo. It seems to be some great straight forward rock with a bit of a psychadelic twist and ethereal vocals resembling Chris Martin’s except that Days Away is like Coldplay with integrity and oomph.

The first tune to grab me and not let go was Ideas, the 4th track, with it’s catchy chorus “Now you’ve got me thinking I’m amazing” which has just the right amount of self-deprecation and self-confidence. After hearing that song all of the other songs build off of it. The album is so diverse and well put together that you can listen to it from beginning to end or shuffle the songs up and it still sounds natural. It’s really hard to pick out a stand-out track on the album (because they’re all great) but Ideas and The Fight will definitely find their way onto my future mixed tapes.

Andrew McMahon (of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin) once told me that he was “addicted” to Day’s Away’s new album. I believe him and you will too after taking a listen to this.

Going to the beach or park this summer? Bring a copy of Days Away’s Mapping an Invisible World and put it in the boom box. It’s tough enough to keep you looking cool, while mellow enough to relax you and not offend the families around you.
